This relief was made by members of the Meroitic (based in the city of Meroƫ) civilization in Nubia. Nubian artisans and craftspeople created a wide variety of artwork, including sculpture, jewelry, pottery, furniture, and metalwork, seen in Meroitic examples such as the Bracelet with Image of Hathor. Historical records indicate that a large class of craftspeople including artists, architects, and sculptors lived in Meroƫ. We do not know how these crafts were organized, as the names of crafts in Meroitic inscriptions so far remain undeciphered. However, it is likely that workshops for temple services existed as they did in Egypt, and some workshops might have been organized at the royal courts.
