Refuting the Ideology of the Lebanese Rentier Economy: Towards Radical Change

Translated from Arabic by Nour Youssef, this essay is a call for radical change and an end to capitalism in Lebanon following the collapse of the Lebanese banking system and economy in 2019. The crisis revealed the failings and fragility of the political and economic systems, and it was not unexpected. Ghattas[1] credits the capitalist framework for upholding all other systems of oppression and marginalization as well. She refers to the nation-state model as a “system of self-destruction”. She calls upon feminists, whose positionalities and commitments to intersectionality primes them to lead during such a disaster. This piece states quite frankly opposition to the Western imposed capitalist system, looking locally to feminists in the regions for visions of freedom and dignity in an entirely new system.
