Air pollution is a health hazard when particulate matter such as smoke, exhaust, chemicals or gases suspended in the air have a diameter less than 2.5 micrometers. Particles this small are not filtered by mucus membranes in the nose and throat, and can thus penetrate deep into the lungs.
