Viewing Making The Perfect Record Through The Matrix

"Making the Perfect Record", is an article written by Jentery Sayers and is published on Scalar. As an article published on the same platform as this graduation project I had a substantial understanding of how the platform works behind the scenes. The article differs from other works examined by myself in that it is not a journalistic piece, but does take advantage of the digital tools that are a large part of my project.

Aesthetic:
"Making the Perfect Record" is published through the same platform as this project, Scalar. It is a free to use platform as likewise, it is free to access the article with no restrictions. The amount of control is relatively high for both the content creator and the reader. The reader has control over the media elements by choosing whether they are played or not. The order of pages within the article is controlled by the reader, but has a "suggested" path that the writer sets in place. This gives the article an inherent structure but at the same time allows for the freedom of choice for the reader. The story is easy to follow and elements are simple to understand.

Content:
Because this is not a journalistic article, the content is written in a different style. As more of a research heavy essay, Making the Perfect Record is more of an informative article that is backed by scholarly works. The textual information is therefore highly informative and well conceived. The amount of work and research is inherent with this type of writing but the addition of media elements makes the story more enjoyable and intriguing. It provides an example for how different types of stories can be told through the digital platform. Especially with articles such as this which deal directly to the senses, the ability to convey what text alone cannot, creates a dynamic narrative.

Technological Capabilities:
The platform of Scalar offers the story for free and has no restrictions on who can view the article. With built in mechanics for the addition of media to the content, Scalar provides authors the opportunity to take advantage of digital platforms for their writing. This involves anything from scholarly works to blog posts. The platform takes into consideration the level of control for both the author and reader. This includes how much influence the reader has over the story such as, what is read or how much is shown per page. The platform has built in mechanics for those with less technological abilities but also allows for more in depth control if the creator has the capability.

Senses and Stimuli:
The topic of the article is on the progression of sound in terms of the music industry. As such, it contains multiple instances of video and audio which brings to life the text. With a background consisting of images that represent the topic, the atmosphere of the article is built around the imagery and the sounds that reside within the narrative.
