An Introduction to This Project
The end goal of this project is to present a well researched and practical response to the overarching question of my research. "What is it that makes a digitally produced, journalistic piece informative, intriguing, and gratifying?" In order to provide a solution, I approached my research from multiple angles. My interests in digital narrative, technology, and journalism provided three seperate approaches to this question and were researched over my time in school during smaller, tutorial projects.
My first project was a study of how digital narratives began and in what form they are currently being produced. Much of my research involved the theoretical work on digital literature as laid down by scholars such as N. Katherine Hayles. Her work on the subject, combined with several others, provided a solid theoretical foundation for myself on the elements and tools that digital literature has to offer. My concluding research took shape in the form of a website that offered an introduction to digital literature. This includes definitions of key terminology derived from several authoritative author's on the subject. This work became integral in working through my final project.
My second research project was an investigation of technologies advancement and its impact on society and social structures. This research provided me with an alternative way to approach technology and to understand the less spoken of, negative consequences that comes along with exponential growth. Most importantly. this research provided better understanding of how humans interact with technology. As my final project deals with reader's interacting directly with technology this became an integral part of my work.
For my third and final research tutorial, I conducted an analysis on the current state of journalism. This began with a look into past statistics and how there is a substantial trend downward in terms of journalistic readership in modern times. This problem has plagued the journalistic world in a multitude of ways including monopolization by companies with the financial means to support the news industry and a decline in the overall number of journalists.
These issues are what spawned the idea for this graduating project as I believe that the revival of journalism is able to take place on the digital platform by using the tools of digital narratives. The first part of my final project can be viewed here.
