Establishing ground rules
Recognizing we would likely be delving into some delicate material, we knew we had to establish ground rules. At the beginning of Spring semester, we, as a group, defined our Community Values. We talked about issues of privacy, speaking our minds and challenging ourselves and others but holding a space for dialogue on the issue rather than engaging in closed-off fighting. We defined accountability in all of this and decided it was best to share where we’re at each day during a check-in so others know how to approach us, and speak up about our triggers to better communicate. Kieran and I also requested a norm of a circle of appreciations to close each class so we could come together and find an ending to this period of time in a positive way. I think it was very important to establish these ground rules for ourselves, even if the process of getting their thoughts/concerns/ideas out was tedious and took significantly longer than we had planned - something we struggled with throughout our time at LAHSA.
