Biography

Yi Shan Tan holds a Bachelors of Arts degree, majoring in Visual Studies, from California College of the Arts (CCA) and a diploma in 3D Design, majoring in Jewelry Design, from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Past professional experiences include an editorial Internship at online art publication Art Practical in 2015 and a curatorial externship at non-profit arts organization, Pro Arts in 2014. In 2015, her article, “Patched Up: Bricolage and Postmodernism in Punk Culture” was published on Artpractical.com. Her senior thesis, Deconstructing Failure: The Ceramic Works of Peter Voulkos aims to expand the “heroic” Abstract Expressionist narrative perpetuated in scholarly writings of avant-garde West Coast ceramist, Peter Voulkos. Instead, her research explores how his works productively engage with deconstruction, paradox and failure.

A practicing ceramist, Yi Shan participated in the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA) in 2016, where she exhibited her funky collection of porcelain-ware. In 2015, she exhibited an installation piece at the group exhibition, Berlin We Ever Were, critiquing global tourism and its impact upon the city of Berlin.
