  “Sites and Cycles of LA: Bike Messengers and the City” centers around the voices of bicycle messengers in Los Angeles by inviting them to tell the story of their city, life, and culture through the medium of photography.
  
  Messengers and couriers were given a disposable camera and, after a group meeting in which prompts and interests were collectively discussed, they were asked to fill their cameras with insights and snapshots from their life and work. This is a method known as "photovoice."
  
  Photovoice is a method that can be traced back to Wang and various co-authors in the mid-1990s. It is commonly understood as a form of participatory action research that is grounded in a tripartite commitment to social action, a transformative objective, and a participatory process (Call-Cummings et al. 2019). The process usually involves enrolling participants of a particular community to take pictures reflecting their personal relationship to the topic of interest. The resulting photographs are taken as stimuli for individual or group interviews. The creative, low-threshold nature of the engagement encourages imaginative and uninhibited engagement producing unforeseen and insightful results.
  
  Using photovoice enables me to explore bicycle messengers' experiences of their job, their self-perception, and their relationship to the urban context. Furthermore, rather than attempting to extract information from bicycle messengers removed from their work environment and embodied practice, the method is immersive and unobtrusive and collects data as it is experienced, rather than retold. The pictures produced are deeply informed by the couriers' environment and lived experience and will spark questions and responses beyond any research design the investigator could come up with in advance. Through this method, participants are able to visually and through reflection foreground what is important to them.

  A los mensajeros y mensajeras se les entregó una cámara desechable y, tras una reunión grupal en la que se debatieron colectivamente algunos temas e intereses del proyecto, se les pidió que llenaran sus cámaras con reflexiones e instantáneas de su vida y su trabajo. Este es un método conocido como “photovoice”.
  
  “Photovoice” o fotovoz es un método que se remonta a Wang y varios coautores a mediados de los años noventa. Se entiende comúnmente como una forma de Investigación de Acción Participativa que se basa en un compromiso tripartito con 1) la acción social, 2) un objetivo transformador y 3) un proceso participativo (Call-Cummings et al. 2019). El proceso suele consistir en inscribir a participantes de una determinada comunidad para que tomen fotografías que reflejen su relación personal con el tema de interés. Las fotografías resultantes se toman como estímulo para después realizar entrevistas individuales o grupales. La naturaleza creativa y de acceso sencillo de este compromiso fomenta que sea imaginativo y desinhibido, y que produzca produce resultados imprevistos e interesantes.
  
  El uso de la fotovoz me permite explorar las experiencias de los mensajeros en relación con su trabajo y el contexto urbano, así como su autopercepción. Además, en lugar de intentar extraer información de manera alejada de su entorno de trabajo y de su día a día, el método es inmersivo y discreto, y recopila datos tal y como se experimentan, en lugar de contarlos de segunda mano. Así, las imágenes que se producen están profundamente influenciadas por el entorno y la experiencia vivida de los mensajeros y suscitan preguntas y respuestas que van más allá de cualquier diseño de investigación que el investigador haya podido concebir de antemano. Con este método, los participantes pueden resaltar visualmente y mediante la reflexión lo que es importante para ellos.
