Muhlenberg College Basketball

The Muhlenberg Basketball teams immerse themselves in community service each year. After contacting the women’s basketball coach, Ron Rohn, we learned that each year the athletes team up with Via of the Lehigh Valley. This non-profit organization supports children and adults with disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. Via and Muhlenberg work together during the week of Via’s All-Star Basketball Classic. For this event, pictured below, children and adults in the Lehigh Valley with special needs visit Muhlenberg to play basketball and interact one-on-one with the ‘Berg athletes.

We contacted the spearhead of this event, Traci Cyr. As a former high school basketball coach and member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame, she is an active member of the athletics community. She reached out to college coaches, including Ron Rohn, and asked if Muhlenberg wanted to be a part of this special event.

Coach Rohn said the event seemed like a natural fit for his team. It was such a good experience for everyone involved that one of the young women acted as an honorary ball girl during the season. She helped with pre-game warm ups and chasing basketballs.

When asked about her experience, class of 2015 co-captain Nicole Pepe praised the event: “Sharing the game we love with the Special Olympics athletes makes basketball more special to us. They're so excited to come play basketball here, but we're even more excited to have them. Something extra special about it is a lot of the Muhlenberg athletes are in Best Buddies, and our buddies are in Special Olympics sports and come cheer us on at our college games. We're each other's biggest fans.”
