UK Considering Making USB-C the Common Charging Standard, Following the EU

In response to the European Union and India's initiatives to establish USB-C as the standard charging port for all consumer devices, the British government has launched a consultation to determine whether it should adopt a similar approach. The focus is on whether USB-C should be the chosen standard for charging.

The consultation is being conducted by the Office for Product Safety and Standards, part of the Department for Business and Trade. They are inviting feedback from manufacturers, importers, distributors, and trade associations on this important issue. If the UK opts not to adopt USB-C and instead chooses a different standard, it's likely that device manufacturers will provide dongles to accommodate this, rather than creating unique versions of devices.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards commented on the topic, stating, "We believe that introducing standardized requirements for chargers for certain portable electrical and electronic devices across the UK could potentially benefit businesses and deliver advantages for consumers and the environment. We are seeking input from manufacturers, importers, distributors, and trade associations to assess whether this would be beneficial, and if so, whether USB-C—as adopted by the EU—should be the basis for such standards."
