1973-1974: Mariposas de el Movimiento

Following their incredible achievement of recruiting 950 Chicana/o Students to the university in the Summer of 1972, the directors of the UMAS EOP were not the favorites of the Universities administration. After all in 1968 there were only nine Chicana/o Students at the university, that is a 105.5% increase of Chicana/o students. The 1972-1973 school year left the UMAS-EOP directors without their jobs, and a 33% decrease of enrolled  Chicana/o students at the Universtiy.

The fall of 1973 brought new life to UMAS, UMASer@s returned to campus demanding the resignation of the newly appointed UMAS-EOP directors, their demands were ignored. The rest of the semester UMASer@s continued their efforts, the fight was not over. The spring semester gave UMASer@s the understanding that their next action needed to be one that could not be ignored.

UMASer@s chose to occupy Temporary Building 1, and did so for 18 days once again demanding the resignation of the newly appointed EOP directors. During the occupation UMASer@s were shown the pain of the movement, when six of them were killed. Neva Romero, Reyes Martinez, and his wife Una Jakola, fell victim to a car bombing at Chautauqua park of May 27th, 1974. Forty eight hours later, Heriberto Teran, Francisco Dougherty, and Florencio Granados, were also killed in a car bombing on the evening of May 29th, 1974. The will forever be known as Los Seis de Boulder, martyrs of the Chicana/o movement in Colorado.
