Camp Little Norway

Setting up operations in Canada

Camp Little Norway, officially known as Flyvåpnenes Treningsleir, was established after Germany invaded Norway as a training camp for expatriate Norwegians to be trained for the Royal Norwegian Air Force . Bernt Balchen, a Norwegian aviator, was key in setting up the camp in Canada. In July 1940, Major Bjarne Øen and Captain Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen were appointed heads of the Army and Naval Air Forces in Canada. Eleven experienced pilots from Norway participated in the first training courses held at the Camp. Throughout the war, over 2,500 Norwegian airmen were trained at Camp Little Norway.
