The Road - Spontaneous

The Assignment

Discussion

In this assignment, we were asked to create a short video that captured our response to The Road after our close reading of the novel.  This project was relatively straightforward and linear compared to some of the other assignments I worked on, and the simplicity I went for made this a good piece, I believe.  In this project, I attempted to make an argument that I figured would be non-standard, and might make me think outside of the box.  In particular, I attempted to make the argument that The Road was not in fact a story about sadness, but an attempt on the author's part to show us how to be happy.  I also wanted to try and make this argument via an appeal to pathos.  An appeal to logos, I figured, would require the video to be substantially longer than it is now.  This would risk losing the audience's attention.  In addition, the medium of video and audio is not well suited to long, essay-like pieces.  Thus, I figured having a shorter, more impactful piece relying mainly on emotions within the story itself would be best.  I drew from a few different sources for the material in this project.  I used a number of quotes from the book itself, expressed either as a scrolling screenshot or as a series of text boxes.  I also used two different clips from the movie, one where the boy receives a Coca-Cola and another where he meets a new family.

In the revisions to this piece, I didn't have all that much to do.  I was very happy with how my original piece turned out, so I avoided making any large-scale changes.  I made a few adjustments to text boxes, broke up the long section of video, and altered a few audio levels in the revised version.  Other than that, I left most of the video as-is.

Technically, this piece was fairly normal.  The linearity meant that there were no complicated animations to manage, only transitions between individual shots.  The text boxes were somewhat difficult to set up, requiring a new text box for each word added in.  The music was provided by Alan Wake, the same person who did the music for my ePoem.  The voice recording was again done on a Logitech G35 headset.
