“Mendieta certainly has an art that has many images of female identity. This is very strong in her work and is a continual theme from the beginning until the end. She had an ambivalent relationship to feminism…she was an activist for women of color. One of her conflicts with feminism as it was expressed in the 70s in New York was that it was not inclusive enough, nor speaking to her specific needs.”
