This is the first official release of music that has been widely considered by critics and fans as black metal. The term black metal predates this demo coming out, being the name of a record by Venom, but this is the first record that, in retrospect, fits neatly into the genre of black metal. This demo is highly infleuential on extreme metal, but it was recieved very poorly upon its intial release.
