Freedom Lost

The American flag is usually viewed as a symbol of freedom and patriotism, yet Bradford's interpretation of the flag paints America as broken. The flipped orientation and lack of color on the flag represents a lack of unity felt by the African American community. In addition, the flush of red paint on the bottom of the flag symbolizes the burning of the flag and its inevitable disappearance from the painting. The burning of the flag is depicted in protest of the American values represented by the flag under which the African-American communities are oppresses.
