Here the metal flag conveys rigidity, severity, and force which contrasts greatly with what a viewer might expect to see in a flag: softness, fluidity, and responsiveness to its environment. Metal alters the way we view the symbol of the flag and deconstructs illusory expectations of nationhood by making the flag physically reflect force and oppression.
