Introduction to Black Art: The Black Experience at Oxy, Fall 1971

Introduction by Amy Lyford, Professor of Art History.
This is a project created by students in Art History 389, Modern and Contemporary Art, in the Fall of 2016.
Students have conducted research over the course of the Fall semester on the exhibition "Black Art: The Black Experience," which was on view in Thorne Hall at Occidental College in the Fall of 1971.

Art Department faculty member Constance Perkins, and student Steve Smith (Class of 1971, History major) collaborated with the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles, to create a group exhibition "Black Art: The Black Experience," that showcased five African American artists working in California. The artists in the exhibition were: David Bradford, David Hammons, Marie Johnson, John Outterbridge, and Noah Purifoy.

Lyford will write a more detailed introduction at the completion of the project (which will be ready prior to class on December 5 this intro will be ready for student feedback).
