Black Arts Building Community

Local galleries such as the Brockman Gallery were the primary advocates of black art. Black arts would have a clear role in critiquing mainstream society as well as community building. Since many black artists found inspiration from their own narratives, much of the art produced was highly personal and therefore tied closely to the artists' respective communities. Black communities also found a way to use art as a platform to explore their African-American heritage in the form of culture courses, as pictured in this poster from Compton Community Center.
