Lamar discusses battling depression, fighting his vices—the devil—and struggling with how to use his power. However, these lyrics take new meaning when paired with the visual. Lamar is shot by a cop who is simply miming a gun with his fingers. This disccusion about mis-used power can now be read as a critique of the police. Moreover, seeing that Lamar is shot in the end of the video perhaps this lends well to Manabe’s ambivalent reading of the song. Or maybe Lamar is telling us that him being alright is not required for we to be alight.
