Season of 1937 - A Veteran

Just like his debut year, Joe was injured during spring training.  He was having problems with his throwing arm in the field.  Joe saw a doctor, who told him that he needed a tooth and his tonsils removed.  Again, he was shipped to New York before the rest of the team for his health.

This season the Yankees won the pennant and the World Series against the Giants.   Instead of going back home right away, like he did the previous year, he stayed in New York to make an exhibition appearance in Queens at Dexter Park.  He was offered vaudeville appearances as well, but turned them down because he had already tried acting and failed.  He was given a part, in 1936, in Manhattan Merry-Go-Round, where he met his future wife and actress Dorothy Arnold.
