Ballads and Performance: The Multimodal Stage in Early Modern England

"The True Form and Shape of Caliban: Monstrous Birth at the Edge of the Human"

David Cressy, Travesties and Transgressions in Tudor and Stuart England: Tales of Discord and Dissension (Oxford, New York: Oxford UP, 2000), 10. Another cat-like monstrous birth is described in the 1602 ballad, "A most strange and trew ballad of a monstrous child borne in Southampton," where a child is born with four ears, two of them resembling those of a cat:

Fowre eares he had vpon his head,
two of them grew vpright;
Much like a cat's eares they did seeme,
which was a grievous sight.
(Clark, ed. The Shirburn Ballads 1585-1616, 295).
