"The True Form and Shape of Caliban: Monstrosity and Wonder in 'The Tempest'"

Although Hounsou portrays Caliban as a character who, according to Julie Taymor, “at his heart is an African man,” Taymor does reference other textual suggestions by giving him “moon-calf markings” in the form of “a white moon circle with a blue eye from the mother who was a blue-eyed hag,” webbed fingers to suggest fish fins, and skin that seems caked with “lava rock and clay” (Radish, “Director Julie Taymor Interview”).
