Of the 26 monster ballads that pre-date 1611, 22 are registered. Hyder E. Rollins estimates that in addition to registered ballads, there were, perhaps, an equal number of unlicensed ballads in circulation, as at least half of the ballads that have been preserved from this period were never registered (“The Black-Letter Broadside Ballad,” 281).
