Enter guards, leading Dionysus, bound. Enter Pentheus.

GUARD

Pentheus, here we are: we've hunted down
the prey you wanted. Except...
the animal was tame: he didn't try to run,
he never lost the flushed wine color in his cheeks.
He just smiled, gave us his hands, told us
we'd better tie him. I felt ashamed. "Stranger,"
I said, "I'm doing this against my will:
it's Pentheus who gave the order."
And those women you had chained, locked
in the dungeon? Well, they're gone now.
They're off in the meadows, dancing,
calling on their god Bromius. The chains around
their legs just snapped, the barred doors
came open by themselves: no mortal did all that.
This person who's come to Thebes is full of miracles.
But all this is your responsibility.
