Summary of Group Facilitation

Our group facilitation was done based off of the TED Talk we watched that discussed the firewall in China. One of my questions for the group facilitation was, “Although social media is highly censored, do you still think it provides some sort of freedom of speech?” The overall consensus was that although social media is censored, it still gives Chinese citizens a platform to voice their opinions. People said that it gave them a starting point to be able to share their viewpoints and get conversations started. Not every topic is censored, so as long as people stay away from sensitive topics, they should not have too many problems. Most people do not know a life without censorship so for them they would not be used to the freedom of speech we have here in the United States so for them it is not strange to have to filter their thoughts before putting pen to paper. Something that is different, is the platform Weibo is based on characters. In Chinese, each character would be equivalent to a few words in English. This means that when posting on Weibo, a Chinese citizen can say a lot more than they could on Twitter, for example. Even though social media is censored, this aspect of it gives them a slight advantage when posting. They can get a lot more into their messages and have to use less posts.
