ASPA Final Portfolio

Post Uploads

This section includes the three posts that were included in class. These were reflections and analyzes of different topics we covered in class, typically with an emphasis on a specific country and a specific context within that country. The first post is about China and the Diaspora and transnationalism, the second post focuses on Hong Kong identity in the film Infernal Affairs, and finally, the last post centers around soft power in South Korea and the heteronormative values that have emerged from it.

The diversity of regions within East Asia is reflective of Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities and the importance of national identity in East Asia. Each country has their own unique history combined with a shared history of interactions and similar cultural norms. However, each country has a strong sense of national identity even though each country is within the same region of East Asia. While not everyone in this community is familiar with one another, they all can relate to each other identifying as a citizen of the same nation creating a shared trait for them all. All posts reflect on a particular aspect of each nation focusing on something unique within that national body, which bring those people together or separates them apart.
