Group Facilitation ( Western Influence within Kung Fu Hustle)

Going into the TED Talk, “Behind the Great Firewall of China”, I was oblivious to the existence of China’s own internet or the level of censorship that went into it. Our discussion into Chinese cinema introduced me to the concept of censorship in China partially, however I had thought that it was limited to produced media such as film and television. From my perspective the Chinese Internet is a disturbingly brilliant method of control. Not allowing people the means to express their voice turns into built up resentment and can eventually turn to movements against the ruling power. On the other hand freedom of voice in an system such as the one that exist in China, means people can cultivate criticisms of the government, as was seen with the Chairman Mao’s 100 Flowers Movement. The Chinese Internet’s method of providing a platform for people’s voice allows people the perception they have a voice while at the sametime controlling the narrative through constant monitorship to prevent any criticisms from coming against the government. What’s truly frightening is that as was shown with the train incident as discussed by the TED Talk, the Chinese government can loosen or tighten their grip on censorship as they see use. As such they can manipulate what is seen on social media so that it appears that the mass public feels one way or another and through that justify actions as they see fit. By doing so, it seems that the Chinese government has covered all bases in preventing social upset through social media. The issue is that the Chinese community is exceedingly clever in finding methods in which to make themselves heard. Just as Kung-Fu was used to express individuality in Chinese cinema while moving away from traditional outlooks perpetuated by wuxia films, the Chinese community manipulated the social mediums at their disposal to allow by creating their own digital language, hiding meaning behind metaphor.
