Contrast Between American and South Korean Musicians

Class Facilitation

How does media portrayal of BTS compare to the portrayal of young artists from the U.S.? Consider the rise of Soundcloud artists and unique artists that do not fit the traditional mold.

The class acknowledged the negative influence that Soundcloud rappers can have on consumers based on the common themes of sex, drugs, and crime and delineates this from the positive messages embodied in music from the k-pop group BTS. The unfavorable subjects that saturate this music genre are responsible for the negative connotation they receive from media. BTS has a positive media reception because of their dedication to constructive topics such as depression, education, and love.
One student addressed the ways in which both groups have risen to broad fame by contrasting the types of music that they create. They explain that because the music generated by Soundcloud rappers is very simplistic and superficial, that it can translate to large audiences and quickly popularize within the music market. On the other hand, BTS has accomplished global recognition by taking the time and effort to use their music as a mechanism of positive influence for their fans. I believe BTS has become so appealing to global audiences because they display superior culture and middle-class values that consumers crave, while American Soundcloud rappers fail to illustrate meaningful culture.
