Popular Culture in East Asia

Media Project

Asia has immense power on the practice of soft power. It has become highly popular and more important in recent years. Interdependence and globalization are the major factors of this power become larger and larger. The cross-culture flows of ideas, images, informations, medias, and even people are also increasing. Because of this fortunate situation, it becomes easier for people to achieve their goals to expand and combine one culture with another in order to get greater ends. Of course, in this millennial era, most countries in the world will be more influenced by China and other big East Asian countries like South Korea and Japan for instances. This happened because they have great tactics to influence the rest of the world with no forces and violences needed like it used to back then. In doing this, they got a chance to trade their development and exchange their culture peacefully. To name a few, one of the culture that spread aggressively to the world is through their movie making. These days, asian movie are not limited to asian people only. People from all over the world will get the chance to see asian movie because of their ideas of making sinophone cinema back in the day. Asia, as we know, are competing to have its own Hollywood. The introduction process of Asia’s combat system, chinese martial arts to be exact, to the Western audiences, doesn’t always as smooth as it is right now. This introduction from East side used to have a rough, uneven, and sometimes had a biased process which can be seen in many publication these days. In spite of all that, they were able to manage their way to infiltrate the western audiences. This breakthrough was started by Bruce Lee. If you ask anyone around to name a martial artist in film. It’s a likelihood that most of them will mention Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan. Why is that? What they have in common is that their movie were mostly translated and they created the ‘sinophone’ version of those movies. There is no denying that most of people are prefer to watch movie that are dubbed into each of their language.

I created a blog consist of platform for people to right their ratings, review, and discussion room opened for all people in the world. From my opinion, I think it’s going to be easy to access for the audience to find my website since I will put all the detail informations on the blog. So, whenever they want to find something regarding the movie they are interested, they can type the information they have, and read my blog for additional information or others’ opinion. Also, I chose to focus on movie area because movie is something they can enjoy and grasp something from it at the same time, e.g. the culture from the movie. Moreover, since movie has an audio and visual component that shows motion, I think that most people will choose this over something with no audiovisual. This media is purposely created so that I can help educate the audiences about the East Asia’s culture. How I educate them? I highlighted the appealing characteristic from the movie that best represent their culture in order to make my blog’s reader curious about the movie and watch the movie right away. For example, I highlighted the technique of the martial arts, the different technique of editing and narrate the movie, and the settings of the movie that portrays their actual living. With creating this blog, I have goals that people will actually find it easier for them to choose the movie they like by looking the background of the movie and the review from other people who might share the same point of view. Also, another goal from creating this blog is to help East Asia’s culture will be more well known in the western communities and help conserve the culture for next generation. The only problem I had in making this media piece is that how I can make my platform communicative and able to deliver the message directly to the readers. In making this media, it made me realized that even though my platform is started as a small network, it can be included as a soft power since it can influence and accessible for people all over the world.
