Art and Narrative Research in Humanitarianism, Development, and the Study of Complex Systems: Sabbatical Study for 2015-16

Overview

This is a compilation of journals tracking my research inquiries through a sabbatical year from teaching in the Dept of Film, Animation, and Video at the Rhode Island School of Design.  My work this year has been focused on articulating the role of an artist-researcher, using the methodologies of art-making to conduct real-world inquiry and problem solving, and developing modes of practical (and not merely communicative) engagement for artists in humanitarian, scientific, crisis-response, development, and social-science contexts.

Because this work is taking a number of forms, this journal set is subdivided into multiple project journals.

Narrative Research - journals on explorations of problem sets through narrative, as well as theoretical writing on narrative 'literacy', and thoughts on contemporary nonfiction filmmaking and the limitations of artists' tools
Artists as Trainers - writing
Other Models for Engagement of Artists in Humanitarian Research
