Michael's Annotated Bibliography

1. In Israel’s first months, largely Arab cities emptied as inhabitants were forced to flee.
Expulsion Picture 1. Digital image. The New Yorker. N.p., 21 Oct. 2013. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/10/21/lydda-1948

This is the first image from The New Yorker magazine is of the Palestinians from Lydda being expelled by the Israeli army. I chose this picture to illustrate, first, the desperate situation of the Palestinians, and second, the few belongings they are carrying and the haste with which the Zionists made them leave.

2.
Expulsion Picture 2. Digital image. Leicestershire Holy Land Appeal. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
http://www.leicester-holyland.org.uk/George_Lydda.htm

This second picture from a British website sympathetic to Palestinians shows the native population fleeing Lydda. This picture is very similar to the earlier picture, and will be shown to highlight the Palestinian's desperate situation as they were forced to flee their homes with very few belongings.

3.

Lydda before the Expulsion. Digital image. 972mag. N.p., 11 Nov. 2013. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
http://972mag.com/thanks-for-doing-zionisms-filthy-work-a-response-to-ari-shavit/81707/

This image found in the Israeli website 972mag shows life in Lydda shortly before the IDF expelled the population from the city. The viewer can see the anxiety in the faces of the Palestinians as they are surrounded by a war situation and will be used in the project to show the state of Lydda before the expulsion.

4.

Ruins of Lydda. Digital image. Palestine Chronicle. N.p., 16 Feb. 2014. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.
http://www.palestinechronicle.com/lydda-and-the-liberal-zionist-view/

This image from the site Palestine Chronicle shows the devastation in the town of Lydda after its occupation by Zionist forces. The viewer easily sees the total destruction of the city, and the picture will be featured to show the total loss of life after the expulsion of its native inhabitants by the conquering Zionists.

5. "Al-Lydd - Palestine Remembered." Palestine Remembered. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Apr. 2016.
http://www.palestineremembered.com/al-Ramla/al-Lydd/

The website Palestine Remembered is an excellent resource for information on the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. This particular webpage on the site is a profile of the expulsion from Lydda (al-Lydd in the Arabic) and has excellent information and charts describing the details of the expulsion by the Zionists.

6. Morris, Benny. "Operation Dani and the Palestinian Exodus from Lydda and Ramle in 1948." Middle East Journal 40.1 (1986): 82-109. JSTOR. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.

This article by Benny Morris, the most prominent Israeli historian of the 20th century, is an in-depth look at what happened during the Israeli operation to conquer Lydda in July 1948. Since it is from the perspective of Morris, this article is significant because it validates much of the Palestinian narrative of the expulsion, up to and including pointing the responsibility for the expulsion directly at Prime Minister David Ben Gurion.

7. Munayyer, Spirio, and Walid Khalidi. "The Fall of Lydda."
Journal of Palestine Studies 27.4 (1998): 80-98. JSTOR. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.

This article, also found in the library database JSTOR, by two Palestinian historians details the expulsion from Lydda from the perspective of the Palestinians. Walid Khalidi is perhaps the most prominent Palestinian historian of the 20th century, and here he introduces the work of Munayyer in exposing how Zionist forces expelled the Palestinians from the city.

8. Kadish, Alon, and Avraham Sela. "Myths and Historiography of the 1948 Palestine War Revisited: The Case of Lydda."
Middle East Journal 59.4 (2005): 617-34. JSTOR. Web. 4 Apr. 2016.

This article found in JSTOR by two Israeli historians is an anomaly on this list. The article purports to refute much of the Palestinian narrative as to what happened during the expulsion of Lydda during 1948, its thesis being that there was not a direct order to evacuate the city. I have included this article in this list in order to show the extent to which pro-Zionist historians are willing to obscure historical truth in defense of a government to which they are sympathetic, and will include its case alongside the other articles to highlight the clear responsibility of the Israeli high command in ordering the expulsion.
