Part One

Botswana: 1 month until requiem

Again, I wake up drenched in sweat.  At this point I am used to it.  I can't recall a peaceful night since I was a child.  I remember those times dearly, and try to reflect on them as often as I can.  Playing at the beach for hours on end, my mother screaming at me from shore to come in before the tide decided to adopt me.  The rough feeling of scraping off the sand before entering the mini van.  Jesus that hurt.  What I would give to feel that pain again.
I get out of my sack and exit the small mud-brick hut.  The air is harsh and dry, but I welcome it over the puddle I was lying in previously.  Can't really tell what time it is, must be around 5.  The sky is dark, the plains are never ending.  The silence is refreshing.  All I've been wanting is silence.  For the past year and a half all I've heard is ringing.  A constant buzz engulfing my eardrum.  Finally quiet.

"Mustafa, did you see it again?" said Adisa as he exited the hut.
"Ya, but honestly, I think I'm ready.  I just want this shit to be over.  Whatever that means, I just want solace."

The year is 2029.  Earth is shit.  I mean literally, it has gone to shit.  For decades we had heard of warnings that climate change was going to catch up with us.  It was a constant political and social battle, hippies against gun-wielding right wings.  "Global warming doesn't exist", they would say.  It didn't take an environmentalist to see what the hell was happening.  You can't escape reality forever.  But as is tradition, problems were ignored for the next generation to deal with.  Of course,  there were many pushed for reformation of our global footprint.  The internet was a driving force in connection for information to understanding what was happening to our environment.  Politicians of the left were struggling to pass bills to boost energy efficiency, green transportation, rev up renewables, phase out fossil rule electricity, manage forest and agriculture, and ensure sustainable development.  The fact of the matter was, damage had already been done.  There was no going back.  Mother Earth had turned her back on her children, because face it we were spoiled brats.

The Earth was dying.  And we were the murders.  As the ice caps melted, sea levels rose.  Most of the planet has been engulfed by the ocean.  Most of Europe gone.  Australia, gone.  Alaska, gone. Florida, gone.  San Francisco and my home of Los Angeles completely under the pacific ocean.  All that remains are lands that are high enough above sea level to house the millions of displaced humans clinging on for dear life.  But soon, those too will perish with the weight our race needs to survive.  Wars are the other major virus crossing nation lines.  Some cling on to the hope that everything will get better.  The rest are more realistic.
