USC Security & Political Economy LabInvestigated the causal pathways that supposedly link natural resources, specifically hydrocarbons, to the onset, duration, and intensity of civil conflict. Conducted a replication study of Michael Ross’ (2004) seminal paper, critically assessing his research design, investigating for observables and coding for hypothesized mechanisms, analyzing these hypothesized pathways in terms of the limits they pose on explaining the causal chains (focus on Algeria’s civil conflict in the 1990s).
