Anatomy of a Literature Review

Proximal studies by location cont'd

Castigliano and Infante continue reviewing research of theater attendance conducted elsewhere in the world. Here, they summarize work by Borgonovi (2004) and Ateca-Amestoy (2008), which address attendance patterns in the United States.

Note that Castiglione and Infante detail studies here that they referenced earlier. In the broad overview of the literature provided in the second paragraph of this section, they cite research by Borgonovi, Ateca-Amestoy, and, from the preceding paragraph, Zieba.

Literature review writers often employ these "callbacks" to reinforce the most important works in an area.

This structure also can help to fill out the otherwise sparse literature review of an under-researched topic.
