Amoxtli: Painted Histories of Indigenous Mexico

Codex Cospi

The Codex Tlamanalli (Codex Cospi) is a pre-Hispanic Indigenous manuscript from the Puebla-Tlaxcala region, one of six documents known as “the Borgia Group.” Its exact author, region, and date of origin are unknown. It presents calendrical, divinatory, and religious information through pictorial writing. This screenfold was one of many of its kind, and would have been used by a religious specialist to provide individuals or small groups with guidance regarding how to live appropriately according to divine and supernatural forces.
