A stage adaptation of Henry James’ Washington Square, The Heiress ran for more than 1,000 performances between its Broadway and Theatre Royal runs; it has been revived several times and won a 1995 Tony for Best Revival of a Play as well as acting and directing Tonys.
The plot follows that of the original novel on which it is based: the brilliant Dr. Sloper resents his unremarkable daughter, Catherine, whom he blames for his wifeÅ› death. She is courted by Morris Townsend, but her father believes him to be interested solely in her inheritance.
