Washington Square
Henry James - novel - 1880 - p. 66
The novella Washington Square relates the tense relationship between a terse, intelligent Dr. Sloper and his good-natured daughter, Catherine, whose intellect he perhaps embittered by the death of his talented wife, has deemed unworthy. The plot follows her romantic entanglements with Morris Townsend, and with its progression also develops her sense of independence and ability to evaluate the actions of others.
The writing style is uncharacteristically simple and straightforward with a linear storyline, making it considerably more accessible to readers who might be put off by James’ frequently florid prose.
Key elements: father figures, marriage
