Cultural Expressions of Indigenous People of Rural India

Adivasi Dances and Songs

Living within and celebrating nature (and natural forces) is an important attribute of adivasi cultures and worldviews; participation in dancing and singing activities is an intimate and integral aspect of their lifestyle. In most adivasi dances and songs, there is no distinction between the performers and the audience; in other words, they become inseparable while performing. During festivities, rituals, and also in everyday life, they sing and dance to communicate their social, psychological, and spiritual emotions and expressions. Such cultural expressions (like the arts and crafts) are traditionally transmitted from one generation to the next. There are numerous variations of dances and songs practiced and performed in the adivasi world.
