"The middle is by no means an average; on the contrary, it is where things pick up speed. Between things does not designate a localizable relation going from one thing to the other and back again, but a perpendicular direction, a transversal movement that sweeps one and the other away, a stream without beginning or end that undermines its banks and picks up speed in the middle." (Deleuze and Guattari 25)
In another page, the idea of concept as a vector is touched on as the point of action. The present, understood as the middle point of temporality, becomes the point of action where things “pick up speed.” The present moment has a certain potential, lost to the finitude of the past and unrealized until the future. It is within the present moment, the now, that we can choose to act and propel ourselves forward, backward, diagonally somewhere, or perhaps, nowhere.
This strata of temporality, arbitrarily demarcated from moment to moment, segments existence into chunks through the verbal spectrum. The present progressive persists, a continuous temporality that “lives” in the moment, such as this document at the time it was written and the time I will spend writing it. But what is this diatribe on temporality going on about?
The stretch of time, conceptually, can be demarcated, segmented, sequenced as a continuum of time, a linear structure. However, does time function within such a linearity or is this a structure applied to time in a way to “master” it. In relation to all the talk about rhizomatic ruptures, the continuum of time implodes into a fibrous network of presents. Consider the time in between times, tenses if it be easier, and within each categorical break lies a moment apart from another: a present in relation to a past, accompanied by a future. Compound that with the fact that time is not an experience limited to single individuals and you have an expansive implosion.
Imagine taking all of the bodies currently in a moment and condensing them into a focal point, considered as the “present.” The present an everlasting moment of the now, with bodies moving through the expanse of time within this singular point. A vibrating grain of potential understood as a point in a line, a way to isolate the expanse. Locating this grain seems impossible, so we draw conceptual boxes around it to try and understand it, despite not considering the whole.
In this box lives Schroedinger’s cat along with the concept vector: a point of action that force is exerted upon to travel in a certain direction, with a particular velocity, within its respective spatiality. Possibly killing the cat in the process.
