Man Without a Liver

Man Without a Liver.

Missoula, May 11. -- One of the most successful operations that ever came under our notice is one that was performed on John D. Gainey, formerly of the 25th infantry band. At the time that the operation was performed it was published in all of the Southern medical journals. Mr. Gainey is a man living practically without a liver, all of it but a small portion being taken out and the part that is left is sewed to his side to keep it in place. At the time the operation was performed the doctors gave it as their opinion that Mr. Gainey could not survive, but they were wrong in their surmises, and the only effect it seems to have had on Mr. Gainey was to make him larger, as he is now very much larger than when he left here over a year ago.
