Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The people of Helena have heard the Twenty-fifth infantry band as an orchestra, and the musically inclined will have an opportunity to hear the military band. The orchestra is made up as follows: Two first violins, two second violins, two violas, 'cello, two basses, flute, oboe, first and second clarinets, bass clarinets or bassoons, French horns, cornets, trombone, tuba and drums, making an orchestral combination that is perfection. It is seldom that an organization of this class is found that can be turned into a military band and have a combination that is perfect either way. For the benefit of those that would like to know there is appended to the distribution of the military band: Piccolo, oboe, E flat clarinets, alto and bass clarinets, E flat cornet, solo, first, second and third B flat cornets, first, second and third altos, solo baritone, first, second and third trombones, two tubas, drums, etc.
It is unquestionably the finest band and orchestra of colored musicians that ever existed, and as the race is known to be musically inclined, that is saying a great deal. Helena will have the opportunity of verifying this statement next Tuesday.
