Maria Torres Part 4

"To a great degree, they were able to achieve their goals because I think the administration really, really did agree in a lot of those things but they just did not know how to go about it."

  • Were there warnings about the protests? Did word spread or was it kind of more … quiet?

It was word of mouth and it was, the word spread among the students through the ...

  • And some faculty?

And some faculty, sure.

  • Did they want to prevent it or they knew?

No, there was no preventing it because nobody knew when it was going to take place, only the students knew when the takeover was going to take place. There was talk of a takeover, you talk about the fact that this is legal this is not. You can do this, but you can’t do that. And so, you have those discussions but on the other hand, the students had a lot of free will and it was a matter of their actions. What you do what you feel is right, you know, and it was there action. Without a doubt, passion, passion everywhere. I think, great, great expectations.  To a great degree, they were able to  achieve their goals because I think the administration really, really did agree in a lot of those things but they just did not know how to go about it. And those that didn’t agree, didn’t agree anyway and they were never going to be in that basket of goodies because they don’t agree. But, the students were very passionate about it and they had tremendous support. There was administrative support, tremendous faculty support for sure.

  • And you helped with bringing them food?

We brought them food because we did not want them to go hungry. We brought them food. Definitely, we brought them food because the students had thought about food – because they didn’t know how long they were going to be occupying the building. But at the point when it became clear that they were going to be there for one day, one night, another day, another light, clearly, we said ‘Ok, they have to have food.’ And so we brought in food. As I said, there was another dean at Pomona and we talked about it and said, ‘definitely’. Let’s bring them food. We had food brought in, just brought in. And there it was: we brought food because they had nothing. We said, ‘how is this going to work’, these poor kids (laughs).
