Maria Torres Part 3

"I think the students were very passionate about how they felt about this and it wasn’t just all minority students. As I said, there was a combination of interests across the board because at that time there was also an interest to have a Jewish Studies group."

  • What were you…where were you at the start of it, at the end of the protests?

Well I was supporting students (laughs). Supporting their action because what they were really trying to convey to the administration was that they wanted more Latino students on campus, more African American studies, more African American students on campus, more diversity on campus, and they wanted more faculty for Chicano Studies, more faculty in African American studies – which at that time was Black Studies – more African American faculty, and…there were no … Asia Resource Centers… none. And there was no Asian American faculty in an African American Studies department. So there were lots of diversity issues being played out in one action. I think the students were very passionate about how they felt about this and it wasn’t just all minority students. As I said, there was a combination of interests across the board because at that time there was also an interest to have a Jewish Studies group. And so, all of these forces came together and then this action came about. It was very passionate; the students were very committed to it, they had a lot of support from the administration (faculty in particular were very supportive), all kinds of faculty were very supportive, and a lot of administrators were too. SO, nobody wanted to see the students hurt; nobody wanted to see the students suffer any serious repercussions for having taken a stand, but I think there was a tremendous respect for them for taking a stand...of course not everyone agrees with that…(laughs).
