montah (Amanda Louie) working in the fields. Elsie Paul remembers hard conditions in the berry fields where she worked as a child and later on as a young woman with her own children; there were “lot of flies, a lot of fertilizers from the fields.”

tʼᶿɛwqʼ (Elderberries)
46
During the period when the Indian Act prohibited Indigenous people from purchasing or consuming liquor, tʼᶿɛwqʼ (Pacific red elderberry) was one of the substances that ɬaʔamɩn people fermented to make homebrew. Elderberries can also be used to aid digestion.
