Brief Biography of Jackson Stakeman

Born in Brunswick, Maine and educated at Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut, and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, I’ve long been invested in the technical side of digital scholarship. I’ve worked in the information technology departments of Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University, and the University of Southern California and as a freelancer across the globe specializing in the support of digital media. Past projects have included the production and filming of a documentary for the Mellon Foundation about the Mellon Mays undergraduate fellowship program, and working on designing the digital workflow for a major New England catalog company. I constantly find myself acting as a gateway between people and their access to machines.

I have worked in the archival and organization of a wide variety of media resources, from stills to videos, dealing with a wide array of issues from conforming multiple standards together to dealing with the various forms of compression for digital assets. Throughout the years I have also worked as a freelance web developer as well, and I have started working with platforms like Wordpress and Adobe Flex to bring the front end and back end design together.

I graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in film studies specializing in digital media. In my own academic work I’ve become increasingly fascinating with this notion of digital pedagogy. We need to take control of the machine not just to learn but also to assist in teaching. My interest lie in the use of technology to reinvigorate traditional pedagogy and scholarship and to also use it to find new fertile fields of critical inquiry. ;Most recently I have been using the emerging area of scholarly critical remix to navigate these new waters, with projects such as “Once Upon a Time in Afghanistan” (http://www.archive.org/details/OnceUponATimeInAfghanistan) It is an investigation of the overlap of western genre narrative and imagery upon the current conflict in Afghanistan, which incorporates footage from John Ford, Sergio Leone, and David Greenwalt. It investigates the way in which the western film genre is being appropriated.
