Performance - Introduction

Performing Arts: Performance Art

Performance art in Greater Cuba has been influential in creating counter-hegemonic public spheres, in pushing cultural policies’ boundaries of what can be said, in redefining the complex relationships between art and politics, and in underscoring the diasporic and transnational nature of cultural production. Performance art is an interdisciplinary genre that borrows from different fields of visual culture such as theater, painting, video art, dance, music as much as from the politically charged daily life. It is considered an alternative practice in that it resists representational systems that are tied to repressive social systems. As part of a Latin American conceptualism, Cuban performance —with its strong diasporic and transnational elements—has redefined the audience as active participants and engaged in an ongoing reformulation of culture.
