Swipe Out Hunger: Swipes Expansion

Swipe Out Hunger has spread to several colleges, with a total of 19 chapters as of May 17th, 2016. This organization has allowed chapters from different universities to create community outreach programs specific to their community. For example, the University of California, Riverside chapter wanted to reduce food insecurity in the San Bernardino and Riverside area by providing fresh fruits and vegetables for their community. UCR’s founding members realized they could utilize the empty unused land on the Riverside campus. With the help of Swipe Out Hunger’s newer model, UCR chapter was able to use some of the funds to create a community garden. Another example is the University of California, Santa Barbara. While providing food for their local homeless shelter, the UCSB chapter realized many of the individuals in the shelter did not know how to use their new iPhones properly. The students decided to extend their assistance to the food insecure communities by teaching these individuals how to use their phones. The UC Santa Barbara Swipes chapter now has student volunteers providing free iPhone tutorials on how to best use their phones. Swipe Out Hunger is unique organization because it provides assistance on the niche issues involving each specific community. By “pinpointing” community issues, Swipe Out Hunger allows improvement one step at a time.
