Swipe Out Hunger: Official Name Change

In 2015, the organization underwent a formal name change and took on its existing name, Swipe Out Hunger. This broader title serves as an umbrella for the multitude of ways Swipes chapters help their food-insecure communities as they see fit, whether it be through cell-phone use tutorials or gleaning fresh produce at local farmers’ markets. Still, collecting students’ meal swipe donations continues to be one of the primary functions of Swipe Out Hunger. Sumekh added that the change reflected the organization’s desire to remove the term “homeless” from the title, a word that is often stigmatizing and discouraging to individuals who are food-insecure and are in the process of rebuilding their lives. 2015 was also the year that Swipe Out Hunger officially became a non-profit organization, making it an emerging leader in the field of hunger awareness and improvement. Still, the movement aims to raise awareness of food insecurity, foster student leadership and Swipe Out Hunger from society.
