Introduction
Collected here are reports, interviews, and images created by teams of UCLA students enrolled in “Iranian Jewish Life in Los Angeles: Past and Present,” a course taught by Dr. Saba Soomekh with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles from the past two years at UCLA. As the students learned, following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, some 60,000-80,000 Iranian Jews left the country and came to the United States, settling primarily in the greater Los Angeles area as well as Great Neck, New York. The growth of the Iranian Jewish community in Los Angeles has shifted the demographics and dynamics of the city's Jewish population and represents a new and important chapter in the history of Jews in Los Angeles. Through their course work, the students studied how immigration has affected different generations of Iranian Jews and documented the remarkable ways Iranian Jews have rebuilt their community and their own lives. This digital exhibit was created entirely from their work in the course.
